KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 30 (Bernama) — It is an uphill task to ask Umno divisional leaders to voluntarily withdraw from contesting in the next general election, said Umno veteran Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Shamsuddin.
He said, however, those who loved the party should be willing to do so to ensure Barisan Nasional’s victory in the election.
He was commenting on Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s call to Umno stalwarts to carry out “extraordinary work to ensure party’s victory in the 13th general election” when briefing delegates to the Umno General Assembly 2011 Tuesday.
Abdul Aziz said the extraordinary work mentioned by Najib also meant that the candidates chosen would not vie for positions in the divisional elections.
“We are aware that there were elected representatives among divisional chiefs who are not well liked by the people although they continued to enjoy the support of Umno members,” said Abdul Aziz.
“These division heads must be willing to sacrifice and make way for potential candidates who are well liked by the people,” he said.
Supreme Council member Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman said the delegates should debate on the extraordinary work formula during the presidential address as it was a formula for BN’s success.
He said, all Umno leaders should accept the formula and set aside personal interests.
Zainal said divisional leaders and members should also accept candidates from outside if there was a dearth of winnable candidates from their constituencies.
Penang BN secretary Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya said the delegates should understand the true meaning of winnable candidates to appreciate the reason behind the new method of candidate selection.
