PERTH, Oct 30 (Bernama) — Malaysia’s “Global Movement of the Moderates” agenda, an initiative of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, has been incorporated in the Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHOGM) communique issued on the final day of the meeting here Sunday.

Najib said this means that as an organisation, the Commonwealth Secretariat should also support the Global Movement of the Moderates.

Speaking to Malaysian journalists, he said that basically people supported the whole idea of the concept.

“It is now up to us to try to crystallise it in terms of activities and programmes that can strengthen the concept, the principles and values associated with the Global Movement of the Moderates,” he added.

The prime minister said that in fact a major seminar on it has been planned for January next year, to be hosted by the International Islamic University Alumni, to which selected leaders worldwide would be invited.

“And the second stage would be to have a kind of institution which will do a lot of research in terms of how we promote the values,” the prime minister said.

He said he would wait for the appropriate time to announce this, adding that it is “coming soon”.

Najib had brought up the Global Movement of the Moderates agenda to the world’s attention for the first time at the United Nations General Assembly in September last year, amid growing Islamophobia.

In his address to the UN, he had said, among other things, that the real issue was not between Muslims and non-Muslims but between the moderates and extremists of all religions, be it Islam, Christianity or Judaism.

The prime minister also brought up the issue at other international events like the Asia-Europe Summit of Heads of State and Government (ASEM 8) in Brussels.

At a gathering at Oxford University in May, also on the same topic, Najib had stated that he opposed political violence in any form and pointed to the path of moderation preached by all religions.

He said those who take the violent path and engage in acts like suicide bombing do not represent their faiths.
