Malaysian Hospitality in Sabah

I would like to share with you my most recent visit to Sabah. On Sunday, my wife and I broke fast with nearly 17,000 people in the district of Tawau. The size of the audience and diversity of ethnic groups in attendance were inspiring.

We arrived at Masjid Al-Kauthar to applause which rang around the masjid and surrounding restaurants. The welcome was most humbling to me.

As I surveyed the faces of Malaysians gathered on this special occasion, I spoke of 1Malaysia and how stronger we will become if we accept diversity. I also emphasised the importance of the voice of the people, and that it is my full intention to serve the needs of all Malaysians.

There followed Berbuka and Jamuan Makan, before my dear wife and I attended the Sumbangan ceremony.

I did manage to include in my social calendar a very constructive meeting with representatives of Tawau’s Chinese Malaysian community before addressing, at a Moreh feast, the issue of increasing power supply to Sabah and Sarawak.

It was a most rewarding day to see 1Malaysia in practice, and I truly appreciate the genuine kindness and warmth extended to my wife and I by the good people of Sabah.
