KUALA LUMPUR, Jun 12, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) — Malaysia and Singapore have expressed interest to build a third bridge that link the two countries, said Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak.

Najib was optimistic for this project as Singaporean Mentor Minister Lee Kuan Yew also showed interest in the third bridge, according to local newspapers on Friday.

He said that the two countries would share the cost of constructing the new bridge that would link the Johor State in southern Malaysia and Singapore.

Najib told reporters here on Thursday that the construction date would depend on the result of a feasibility study that would also include the construction cost.

The bridge could boost the development of eastern Johor State as well as Malaysia’s east coast region, including states of Pahang and Terengganu, Najib said after he attended the Malaysia 2010 Budget consultation meeting at the Finance Ministry.

The Singaporeans reportedly had even said that the bridge might bring further development to a seaside tourism destination, Desaru in the Johor State, which would be similar to a famous beach of Nusa Jaya in Bali, Indonesia.
