MIRI, Jan 24 (Bernama) — Miri will host the 2011 Malaysia Chinese New Year Open House scheduled for Feb 6.
Deputy Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Joseph Salang said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Yang Dipertua Negeri Sarawak Tun Abang Muhammad Salahuddin and Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud were among the distinguished guests expected at the event, which would be held at the Miri City Fan Square, here beginning 4pm.
Speaking to reporters after chairing the organising committee’s second meeting here today, Salang said about 30,000 people were expected to attend the open house which was the first in its series in Sarawak.
“This is a very important event as it is not only to celebrate Chinese New Year, but also to inculcate the spirit of unity and promote the arts and culture of the multi-ethnic people in Sarawak,” he said.
The main organising committee for the event is jointly chaired by Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim and Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan.
Salang said apart from attending the event, Najib was also scheduled to visit several shops in Miri.
“Outstanding students as well as those from underprivileged families will also receive donations during the event,” he said.
