Making “Malaysia vs Man City” an event for everyone

I believe that sports is one of the most powerful forces in bringing people together, regardless of age, race and ethnicity. This unity that sport brings can be witnessed here in Malaysia, and one of the biggest things that unites us in our diversity is a passion for football.

This passion could be seen last month as millions of Malaysians thronged mamak restaurants in the early hours of the morning to watch Euro 2012, and you’ll see it again at the end of this month as our national team hosts the English Premier League champions Manchester City in Bukit Jalil.

I feel it is important that football fans from all walks of life have the opportunity to support our national team at this event. So I’m delighted that 50,000 tickets are being made available at the special accessibility price of RM10. We are able to make this possible because of the strong relationship established between Malaysia and Abu Dhabi, Man City’s owners.

I’m doubly delighted that they have announced to contribute a substantial portion of the ticketing proceeds to charity. A full 60% will be donated to Yayasan 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) – a foundation that invests in education and healthcare nationwide.

Last week I tweeted that the first 15,000 tickets were to be sold in conjunction with the 1Malaysia 4 Youth (1M4U) event in KLCC last Sunday. The response was overwhelming as a significant number of tickets were sold during the event itself! If you missed your chance, don’t worry, these special priced tickets are still available. Read the statement by Yayasan 1MDB on how to get them here.

There is also a limited number of tickets worth RM108 and RM388 to give away to those of you reading this blog. All you need to do to apply is to fill up your details here and collect your tickets. Upon doing so, you stand a chance to be the lucky recipient of an exclusive Manchester City jersey, signed by the players.

Recognition and gratitude is due to Abu Dhabi for this gesture of friendship and goodwill. It is my hope that this good relationship will continue to strengthen… even if we manage to beat Man City on the football field!
