KELANA JAYA, June 22 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today opened the first “Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia”, which will operate on a mini market format.
Operated by Mydin Mohamed Holdings, the shop will act as the medium for the government to control prices and lessen the monopolisation of products which have long been dominated by multinational manufacturers.
“Kedai Rakyat 1 Malaysia” will serve the same consumer segment as hypermarkets do but with emphasis on consumers with basic essential needs.
“The “Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia, I understand, will not only provide various basic necessities at low prices compared with other hypermarkets but will act as a platform for the development of small-and-medium entrepreneurs and give emphasis to products manufactured by them,” Najib said at the opening of the maiden shop at the Kelana Jaya LRT station here Wednesday.
“Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia” is part of the 1Malaysia initiative, advocated by Najib in line with the 1Malaysia slogan of “People First, Performance Now”.
