KUALA TERENGGANU: The government’s contribution to progress and development has been invaluable, and the transformation of the country will continue, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said yesterday.
“So many transformations have taken place for the benefit of the people and nation. The Barisan Nasional government’s deeds to the people are unmeasurable and invaluable, and will not stop.”
Najib cited the success of Felda, which had transformed itself from a resettlement authority growing oil palm to a global entity in the commodity.
“Felda has altered settlers’ lives. The spillover from its core business has benefited the nation since its incorporation 50 years ago and the 112,000 settlers are now much better off compared with when they first started.
“In most settlements, the original wooden houses have been replaced with bungalows. And they build these new homes with their own savings and not bank loans.
“We will not stop with the success of the first generation. We will continue to provide education for their children because we want them to become successful, too, and not become a burden to the nation,” he said at the opening of the Felda Residence hotel here.
The 20-storey hotel is the latest landmark here. It has 101 rooms and cost
RM27 million. Located on the Sungai Terengganu riverbank, the hotel has registered between 75 and 85 per cent occupancy since it opened last July.
“Felda is a BN agenda and a BN agenda is always for the rakyat. In Terengganu, we have spent RM718 million to open new settlements for the people.”
Najib later chaired a closed-door meeting with the state Umno liaison committee and presented awards to students who excelled in their Penilaian Menengah Rendah and Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah exams last year.
He later launched the Umno Wanita, Pemuda and Puteri election machinery at the Islamic Civilisational Park..
