PERMATANG PAUH, Sept 11 (Bernama) — A housewife in Kampung Padang Ibu is overwhelmed to have Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak arriving at her doorsteps to visit her.
“I was excited and nervous when informed that the prime minister would visit my house.
“I’m touched by the prime minister’s willingness to come to the house and present contributions to the family,” said Nor Asmah Othman, 41, after Najib’s visit today.
She said she was nervous at first, but felt comfortable when talking to Najib after a while.
“Najib is indeed a leader with the people’s interests at heart,” she added.
Her house was selected for Najib’s visit under the Information Communication and Culture Ministry’s “Sentuhan Rakyat” programme.
Najib, who was here to attend the Information Communication and Culture Ministry’s Malaysia open house at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Guar Perahu, arrived at Nor Asmah’s house at 11.40am.
The prime minister, who was accompanied by Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim and wife, Datin Sri Masnah Rais, was served with local delicacies, like Pek Ngah (coconut bread) and fried mushrooms.
She said the prime minister told her the food was delicious.
Nor Asmah, who has six children, said she now had to take the role of the family breadwinner when her husband could no longer work due to a chronic skin disease.
During the visit, Najib also took some time to meet the country’s first female police constable, Bedah Mohamed, who served during the Emergency period.
Bedah, 91, from Nibong Tebal, said she joined the force at the age of 30 and was based at a camp in Nibong Tebal.
My task then was to prevent locals from smuggling rice or sugar to the communist, she added.
