KUANTAN: About 40,000 people from all walks of life filled the Padang MPK 1 here yesterday to attend a ceremony which marked the homecoming of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s after his appointment as the Prime Minister on April 3.

The crowd started to come as early as 7am and two hours later, every corner of the field was filled with people anxiously waiting for Najib and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

The couple arrived at about 9.20am, accompanied by Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob, state dignitaries, senior government servants, politicians and prominent figures to the resounding sound of drum beats performed by various cultural groups.

There was also a 10-minute dance and martial arts performance.

Najib, in his speech, said his ‘1Malaysia, people first, performance now’ concept was a continuity to former Prime Ministers’ slogans – of both Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s ‘Cemerlang, Gemilang, Terbilang’, and Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Vision 2020. He added that he needed to find the ingredients to attain goals of prospering the country and its people.

He also said he was very fortunate and grateful to be able to follow in the footsteps of his late father, Tun Abdul Razak, who was the country’s second Prime Minister and would do his best to steer Malaysia in becoming a developed nation.
