KOTA KINABALU, April 20 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the government will strive to achieve more success for the comfort of the people in line with the vision to make Malaysia a developed nation by 2020.

He said among the government’s latest success stories was the distribution of the 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M) to 4.12 million households throughout the country so far.

He also said that 5.3 million school students had obtained assistance worth RM100 each while another 1.3 million Form Six, matriculation and university students were given RM200 in book voucher each. “We are determined to build on this success because we have a big mission, that is to take our country on a journey…a journey that will bring us towards becoming a developed and high income nation,” he said when opening the Malaysian Trust Fund Week 2012 at Likas Sports Complex, here.

He said the success which the government aspires to achieve was not an empty promise or a pipe dream or an unrealistic aspiration but a proven endeavour which saw the nation’s per capita income increasing from US$6,700 (RM20,540) in 2009 to US$9,700 (RM29,740) last year.

He expressed confidence that the success was a sign that the journey toward becoming a high-income nation was nearing its destination.

“This has brightened our hope and enhanced our confidence that if we continue with this journey, if we believe and give our support, we will reach our destination within the stipulated timeframe,” he said.

On the Malaysian Trust Fund Week, Najib said, he hoped that it would increase awareness especially among the people of Sabah on the importance of investing and saving for the future.

At the event, the prime minister presented the keys for a Toyota Hilux truck contributed by UMW Holdings and a special edition motorcycle sponsored by Malaysian Industrial Development Finance Berhad (MIDF) for the event’s first and second lucky visitors.

The nine-day event from Friday is open from 9am to 9pm.
