PUTRAJAYA, Jan 19 (Bernama) — A group of Fulbright English teachers from the United States called on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today at his office here.
Also present at the meeting was Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
The English Teaching Assistants (ETA), who arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Jan 4, will be assigned to Johor, Pahang and Terengganu for a 10-month stint beginning Jan 31.
In addressing them, Najib said the bilateral ties between Malaysia and the U.S. is all about people.
“It’s all about us Americans and Malaysians wanting to work together, wanting to exchange whatever strengths we have. What better way then in the field of education because education is the thing that really makes a difference,” he said.
The ETA programme has tripled this year based on the shared commitment of U.S. President Barack Obama and Najib to expand people-to-people exchange programmes between the United States and Malaysia.
Najib said Malaysia is giving a lot more emphasis to English because it is very vital for Malaysians to have the competitive edge.
“This is going to be a very important step in that direction because when we have Americans teaching our kids, I’m sure our kids will be highly motivated and inspired,” he said.
