SANDAKAN: Thousands of primary schoolchildren will start receiving free milk from next month.

Announcing the good news here on Malaysia Day yesterday, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the “1Malaysia milk” would be distributed to Year 1 to Year 6 pupils nationwide.

“This is part of the Govern-ment’s efforts to build a generation of healthier and stronger Malaysians,” the Prime Minister told reporters after launching the state-level Juara Rakyat and Hari Raya open house here.

The fresh milk will be distributed by Sabah International Diary Sdn Bhd.

Najib, who described milk as nutritious for the healthy development of children, said the initial cost of the programme would total RM4mil.

Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman, he said, had assured that Sabah had sufficient milk to sustain the nationwide school milk programme.

Najib said Sabah would become famous as a milk-producing state.

“Children in Gua Musang will know that the milk is from Sabah,” he said, adding that the programme would also benefit villagers who could get involved in the milk industry.

On police investigations into the murders of cosmetic millionaire Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya and three others, the Prime Minister congratulated the police for their speedy investigations.

“I hope they will get all the necessary evidence for a conviction.

“The police can charge those involved in court but there must be enough evidence for the court to convict those involved,” Najib said before flying back to Kota Kinabalu to open the new Intan campus in Sepanggar and launching the Malaysia Day celebrations.
