Education Transformation Needful To Create Thinking Generation – Najib

KUALA LUMPUR, March 13 (Bernama) — A transformation of the national education system is necessary to create a younger generation which can think and adapt knowledge to face future challenges, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Tuesday.

He said education had hitherto emphasised memorisation (the what part) and this has to be changed to give emphasis to the thinking process (the how part) so that students can use the knowledge gained to their advantage.

“We have to bring about an education transformation where the essence is to motivate students to think because we want to create a generation which can think creatively, innovatively and critically, as well as think out of the box and resolve problems.

“The world has changed. We need to prepare the present generation to face the world of the future which will surely be much different from that of today,” he said when launching the “i-Think” education programme at Parliament House.

Also present was Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who is also the education minister.

Najib said the i-Think programme, now implemented in 10 schools, would be extended to about 1,000 more schools next year and all schools by 2014.

The i-Think programme is a joint venture between the Education Ministry and the Malaysia Innovation Agency, and is aimed at instilling the capacity to think creatively and innovatively at the level of the primary and secondary schools.

Earlier this year, 10 schools were selected to be in the pilot project to introduce the thinking process in school children.

Muhyiddin, in his speech earlier, said the i-Think programme is the initial step of the Education Ministry to transform the culture of education of children and enhance the capacity of teachers.

He said 700 teachers have been trained to handle the programme, and 10,000 pupils and students were involved in the pilot project.

Muhyiddin also said that the skills would be incorporated in the modules at the teacher training institutes to prepare new teachers to handle the programme.
