KUCHING: The Islamic agenda which stresses on people’s welfare will not be sidelined as the country strives towards achieving a high income nation by the year 2020, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

He said the government had always placed people’s needs, including their religious needs, as the foundation of its struggles and would continue doing so.

“The people’s needs which covered education, welfare and economic development, have been and will be included in the annual budget,” he said when officiating at the opening of 54th National-Level Al-Quran Recital here yesterday.

Besides, he said, the government had lined up tangible and holistic transformation programmes in its administration and economic and social endeavours.

Najib said the main programme for the country towards achieving a high income nation lay in enhancing people’s welfare and well-being through realistic and practical approaches.

“The Economic Transformation Programme that has been implemented will create the desired and balanced outcome in line with the country’s aspirations and Islam,” he said.

Najib said the government had also recognised fully the role of religion in spearheading the country towards Vision 2020.

“This is clearly proven when the government increased the monthly allowance for all religious teachers (guru Kafa and guru takmir masjid) and iman, so that they are not living in the poverty bracket,” he said.

He said they would also be entitled to receive pension, which showed that the government had been looking after the people’s welfare in the past 54 years.

“It’s nothing new,” he pointed out.

This year’s national-level Al-Quran recital is themed “1Malaysia 1Ummah”.

A total of 29 qari and qariah nationwide are taking part in the five-day event which will end on June 17.
