Malaysia-China ties have been strengthened significantly throughout my term, leading China Ambassador’s to Malaysia, Chai Xi, to say that relations are in their “best period in history.” This relationship is particularly strong in economic terms, with bilateral trade reaching almost RM305 billion. As a result, Malaysia was China’s largest trading partner for a fourth consecutive year. I have also promoted dynamic cultural and people-to-people exchanges with China. China has recognised all IPTAs while Xiamen University is opening a campus branch in Malaysia – their first outside China.

Key outcomes:

  • 2013 – Kuantan Industrial park ground-breaking.
  • 2012 – Qinzhou Industrial Park (QIP), a Malaysia-China joint-venture project in the coastal area of Guangxi province.
  • 2012 – Currency swap agreement established in 2009 extended for another three years, increasing the size of the deal from RM40bil to RM90bil.
  • 2009 – Strategic action plan covering 13 major areas, which serves as guidelines for relations between Malaysia and China.
