KUALA LUMPUR: The government’s next mission in its agenda to transform the rural community is to nurture sustainable entrepreneurs, Datuk Seri Najib Razak said.
The deputy prime minister said previously, focus was mainly on infrastructure development in rural areas.
With the new shift, there would be opportunities for the rural community to venture into basic entrepreneurship.
“It is time we have rural entrepreneurs who can produce goods that can penetrate the international market,” he said when opening the Rural Entrepreneur Carnival at Dataran Merdeka yesterday.
Najib said budding entrepreneurs must dream big if they wanted to achieve domestic and international success.
“But first, they must equip themselves with knowledge, besides putting more effort into their ventures and having a positive attitude.
He also told them to take advantage of modern technology, conduct research and development and focus on skills training.
Najib said through the Rural Entrepreneurship Development Master Plan, the government would soon establish a Rural Entrepreneur Centre in Johor. Its aim is to assist the development of rural entrepreneurship programmes.
More than 100 rural entrepreneurs have set up booths at the carnival, selling local and traditional products.
