Appointment Of Board Of Directors And CEO Of Ekuinas

The Government today announced the appointment of the key Board members and management that will spearhead Ekuiti Nasional Berhad (Ekuinas), the newly established private equity investment institution aimed at promoting effective Bumiputra economic participation in a sustainable and market friendly manner.
YM Raja Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Arshad Raja Tun Uda, formerly Executive Chairman of PriceWaterhouseCoopers, has been appointed the Chairman of Ekuinas, while Media Prima Berhad’s outgoing Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Abdul Rahman Ahmad has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer and Director of Ekuinas, effective 1 September 2009.
Dato’ Azman Yahya, the Group Chief Executive of Symphony House Berhad and formerly the Managing Director of Pengurusan Danaharta Nasional Berhad, Tan Sri Mohamed Jawhar Hassan, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia, and Dato’ Noriyah Ahmad, the Director General of the Economic Planning Unit, Prime Minister’s Department, have also been appointed to be the founding members of the Board of Directors.
Prime Minister, YAB. Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Razak announced the establishment of Ekuinas on 30 June 2009 as part of a number of measures announced to further enhance the competitiveness of the Malaysian economy whilst maintaining the Government’s commitment towards promoting sustainable, meaningful and effective Bumiputera participation through genuine partnerships and meritocracy.
Ekuinas will manage an initial fund of RM500 million which subsequently, will be enlarged up to RM10 billion. Ekuinas will be commercially driven, with investments focused on strong Malaysian companies with high growth potential and will work towards attracting and nurturing talent for management in investee companies. Ekuinas will also collaborate with private capital and adopt best practices of global private equity firms.
Similar to Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB), Ekuinas will be established under a trust, Yayasan Ekuiti Nasional. The trust will be chaired by the Prime Minister and trustees will include the Deputy Prime Minister, senior Ministers and Government officials.
According to the Prime Minister, “On the Board of Ekuinas are highly regarded and experienced professionals with reputation of integrity. I am confident that Ekuinas will be successfully established and in time build a strong track record in achieving its objectives.”
The Ekuinas Board shall now commence work in finalising its investment and operational structure with the view of announcing its initial framework by end of August 2009.
YM Raja Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Arshad Raja Tun Uda
Raja Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Arshad is a Director of Khazanah Nasional Berhad and Sime Darby Berhad. He is also the Chairman of Binariang GSM Sdn Bhd and Chairman of Yayasan Raja Muda Selangor.
He was Executive Chairman and Senior Partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Malaysia for 18 years, Chairman of the PwC Asia 7 Leadership Team and a Member of the PwC Global Leadership Team. His other international roles included memberships of the PwC Global International Financial Reporting Standards Board and the Standards Advisory Council of the International Accounting Standards Board.
Raja Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Arshad is a Fellow of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, Member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants and Member of The Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants where he served on its Council for 24 years, 3 years as President.

Abdul Rahman Ahmad
Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Media Prima Berhad
Abdul Rahman bin Ahmad, is currently the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Media Prima Berhad (MPB). He was appointed to the Board of MPB on 22 October 2001.
Before his appointment as the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of MPB on 1 September 2003, Abdul Rahman was the Chief Executive Officer of Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB), a position he took up in August 2001. He currently sits on the Board of MRCB, The New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Berhad and Composite Technology Research Malaysia Sdn Bhd. He is also the Executive Director of Sistem Televisyen Malaysia Berhad (TV3).
He is instrumental as part of the team that aggressively expanded MPB – firstly in growing and consolidating the Free to Air television industry, developing the radio, outdoor and online media platforms for the Group as well as actively participating in the turnaround of the group’s print business, the NSTP .
Under his leadership, the MPB Group was also transformed from its debt laden and loss making position into a profitable entity which saw it achieving more than RM100m in net profits for both 2007 and 2008.
MPB also received regional recognition as Malaysia’s Best Managed Mid Cap Company from Finance Asia, one of Asia’s leading financial publishing company as well as ranked 7th by The Minority Shareholder Watchdog Group (MSWG) amongst the best corporate governance company in its annual survey of over 500 public listed companies.
Abdul Rahman started his career as an Assistant Manager at Arthur Andersen, London, from 1992 to 1996, after which he held the position of Special Assistant to the Executive Chairman of Trenergy (M) Berhad/Turnaround Managers Inc (M) Sdn Bhd until 1999. He subsequently joined Pengurusan Danaharta Nasional Berhad (Malaysia’s National Asset Management Company) as a Unit Head from 1999 to 2000 and went on to become an Executive Director of SSR Associates Sdn Bhd until August 2001.
He holds a Master of Arts from Cambridge University, England, and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, England & Wales.
YBhg. Tan Sri Mohamed Jawhar Hassan
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia
Tan Sri Mohamed Jawhar served with the government before he joined ISIS Malaysia as Deputy Director-General in May 1990. He was appointed Director-General in March 1997 and was subsequently appointed Chairman and CEO of ISIS Malaysia on 9 January, 2006.
His other positions include: Member, Economic Council; Member, National Unity Advisory Panel; Member, Advisory Board, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission; Non-Executive Chairman, New Straits Times; Co-Chair, Network of East Asia Think-tanks (NEAT) 2005-2006; Chairman, Malaysian National Committee, Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC); Co-Chair, Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia Pacific (CSCAP) 2007-2009; Expert and Eminent Person, ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Register; Member of the Board of Directors, International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies; and Distinguished Fellow, Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia.
Tan Sri Jawhar was Project Coordinator of Malaysia’s Master Plan on Knowledge-Based Economy. He also helped draft the Report of the Royal Commission to Enhance the Operation and Management of the Royal Malaysian Police.
Tan Sri Jawhar served as a member of Penang Knowledge Economy Information Communications Technology Council (K-ICT Council) since its inception. He was heavily involved in the formulation of the K-ICT Blueprint in support of the government’s goal of making Penang a fully developed state by 2010.
Tan Sri Jawhar was also the lead drafter of the Islamic Development Bank’s Vision 1440 Hijrah document.
Before joining ISIS, his positions included Director-General, Department of National Unity; Under-Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs; Director (Analysis) Research Division, Prime Minister’s Department; and Principal Assistant Secretary, National Security Council. He also served as Counselor in the Malaysian Embassies in Indonesia and Thailand.
YBhg. Dato’ Noriyah Ahmad 
Director General, Economic Planning Unit 
Dato’ Noriyah binti Ahmad was appointed Director General of the Economic Planning Unit on 18 June 2009. Dato’ Noriyah’s career with the Government began in 1975 as an administrative and diplomatic officer and her service has included the Ministry of Energy, Communications and Multimedia, INTAN and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs. She is currently also on the Board of Directors for Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd and the German Malaysian Institute. Dato” Noriyah holds a degree in Applied Economics from Universiti Malaya and a master’s degree in Developmental Economics from the University of Kent, United Kingdom.
YBhg. Dato’ Mohamed Azman Yahya
Group Chief Executive of Symphony House Berhad,
Dato’ Azman is the founder and Group Chief Executive of Symphony House Berhad, a listed outsourcing company and the Executive Chairman of Bolton Berhad, a listed property group.
He graduated with a first class honours degree in Economics from the London School of Economics and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, the Malaysian Institute of Accountants and a fellow of the Malaysian Institute of Banks.
He started his career in auditing with KPMG in London before returning to Malaysia in 1988 where he built his career in investment banking as the chief executive of Amanah Merchant Bank.
During the Asian Financial Crisis in 1998, Dato’ Azman was appointed by the Government of Malaysia to set-up and head Danaharta, the national asset management until 2003. He was also the Chairman of the Corporate Debt Restructuring Committee which was set-up by Malaysian Central Bank to mediate and assist in the debt restructuring of viable companies until its closure in 2002. During his tenure with the Government in tackling the financial crisis, he received a number of international recognitions including being named amongst Asia’s most influential bankers by Institutional Investor and Restructuring Agency Chief of the year by Asiamoney.
Outside his professional engagements, Dato’ Azman is active in public service. He sits on the boards of Khazanah Nasional Berhad, the investment arm of the Government of Malaysian, and a number of its investee companies including Malaysia Airlines and PLUS Expressways. Dato’ Azman also serves as a member of Bursa Malaysia Securities Market Consultative Panel, the National Council for Scientific Research and Development, the National Innovation Council and the Special Taskforce to facilitate Business (PEMUDAH). He was a founder director of the Kuala Lumpur Business Club and is the Chairman of Motorsports Association of Malaysia.
