PETALING JAYA: An Australian daily has clarified that its report which stated that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s daughter had gone on a shopping spree in Perth was false.

An online portal reported that The West Australian, in its “Corrections and Clarifications” column, admitted yesterday that Najib’s daughter had not even been in Perth during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) as it had earlier reported.

“In a report by the West Australian on Monday about shopping and sightseeing by CHOGM delegates, it was claimed that a daughter of the Malaysian PM Najib Razak spent A$60,000 (RM194,000) in David Jones.

“The West Australian acknowledges that this was not the case and that Najib’s daughter was not in Perth at the time,” it said in the correction.

Najib had also clarified on Twitter that the news was untrue.

“Don’t believe and spread lies. My daughter was not even in Australia and my wife (Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor) did not buy any jewellery,” he said in his tweet on Thursday.

The first report in the Australian daily had also mentioned that “one first lady was known to have bought A$150,000 (RM487,989) worth of WA (Western Australian) pearls”.

It did not name the person.
