The aims of ASEAN include accelerating economic growth, social progress and cultural development among its 10 South East Asian country members. It also seeks to protect regional peace and stability, acting as a forum in which member countries can discuss differences peacefully. As well as being an active member of ASEAN, Malaysia will host the ASEAN Summit in 2015.

As an advocate of strengthening ASEAN functions and its ties, I have played an active role in the key outcomes of the organisation, including:

  • Signing ASEAN’s first human rights declaration (AHRD) in November 2012. This officially committed ASEAN to its first multi-lateral convention [NM1] to promote the fair treatment of every individual irrespective of race, religion and political opinion.
  • Work towards establishing The ASEAN Community at the end of 2015, when Malaysia takes over the chairmanship of ASEAN. The ASEAN Community will be based on three main pillars – ASEAN Political-Security Community, ASEAN Economic Community and ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community.
