KUCHING: The federal government will give financial assistance to flood victims and farmers whose crops were destroyed by floods in Sarawak.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said flood victims who were evacuated to relief centres would receive RM300 per family.
He said families who were affected by floods but did not move to a relief centre would also get RM300 each.
“Either there was no relief centre in their area or they moved to a relative’s home. These families will be verified by district and state authorities.
“Once we get the list, we will give them the same amount of assistance as that for evacuees who moved to relief centres,” he told reporters after holding a dialogue with state Barisan Nasional leaders and elected representatives in Kuching on Thursday.
Najib said financial assistance would also be given to farmers who were affected by the floods that hit Sarawak recently.
He said the the quantum to be given would be decided in discussions between the federal and state governments.
“We have agreed in principle to provide the assistance, especially to padi farmers whose crops were ready for harvest but were destroyed by floods,” he said.
He added that the federal government had also agreed to provide assistance for repairing infrastructure and basic amenities damaged by floods.
“If the amount needed can be calculated before the end of this month, it will be included in the mini budget which I will table in Parliament on March 10,” he said.
