PAKAN – The government will acquire 877,000 more units of the 1Malaysia netbooks under its next distribution phase for students from needy families nationwide soon.
Deputy Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Joseph Salang said so far, 123,000 units had been distributed.
“The distribution is in furtherance of the promise made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to give away one million units,” he said after distributing 500 units to selected students of SMK Paka and later another 500 at SMK Julau Saturday.
“It is also to help achieve the government’s target of 50 per cent household penetration by the end of this year under its National Broadband Initiative.”
Salang said a number of community broadband centres had also been set up in rural areas nationwide to meet this objective.
Meanwhile, he called on the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to advise service provider companies to improve their services, especially in the rural areas.
“We need greater enabling capacity for Internet access as there will be more 1Malaysia netbooks, individual laptops and desktops being used.
“Otherwise, the congestion problem will be acute,” he said.
At a another function, Salang advised school leavers in the state to take up courses relevant to all kinds of SCORE (Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy) and Tanjung Manis Halal Hub industrial needs.
“These are in the alumimium, petro chemical, agriculture, glass, fishery, services, livestock breeding, ICT and high-technology manufacturing sectors,” he said.
