KUALA LUMPUR, May 2 (Bernama) — The contents of the 1Malaysia concept will be realised through evolution, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
“It’s a process, it’s a journey and it will not happen overnight.
“I wish you all to join me in this journey towards 1Malaysia,” he said when officiating the 14th Kaamatan Day Klang Valley Celebration 2009 organised by the Klang Valley KadazanDusun Cultural Association here today.
“We will get there as one people and when that happens, Malaysia would be truly united and become a prosperous country,” he said.
He said 1Malaysia was not just a mere political statement that could simply be expressed in words, but it needed substance.
“First of all, it is to accept the idea of one people. We might be diverse in the context of ethnic, sub-ethnic and culture and many respects but we can be together as one people and that is the essence of 1Malaysia,” he said.
Najib said Malaysians must believe in mutual respect and should go beyond the concept of tolerance which was acceptance, and thus lead to reaching a higher level of understanding in terms of one people.
The Prime Minister also said that his presence at the function could be considered as one his walkabouts since taking office as the country’s chief executive.
“I don’t want my presence to be measured based on the kompang, the red carpet; even the backdrop of this function today is not my name.
“I drop by to celebrate Kaamatan Day because I would like to stress here that I am Prime Minister for all Malaysians,” he said.
Present were Deputy Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima aimeph Pairin Kitingan who is also Sabah Kadazandusun Cultural Association president and Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Maximus Johnity Ongkili.
